Appellations Muscadet S猫vre et Maine, Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire, Muscadet C么tes de Grandlieu

These three regions may all produce Muscadet Sur Lie. Many wines from Muscadet S猫vre et Maine, depending on the terroir, can benefit from several years of bottle aging while wines from Muscadet C么tes de Grandlieu tend to mature earlier and exhibit rich, flowery aromas.
 

Vineyard

Location: Muscadet S猫vre et Maine covers twenty-three communes to the southeast of Nantes and is named afte the two rivers tht cross the vineyards: the Petite Maine and the S猫vre Nantaise. Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire is in the Ancenis region on both banks of the Loire upstream from Nantes. Muscadet C么tes de Grandlieu is southwest of Nantes and includes nineteen communes alongside Lake Grandlieu.

  • Muscadet S猫vre et Maine: 8,800 hectares / 21,745 acres
  • Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire: 200 hectares / 494 acres
  • Muscadet C么tes de Grandlieu: 300 hectares / 741 acres

Soil: A varied structure of igneous and metamorphic rock from the Massif Armoricain, mainly comprising gneiss, mica schist, and smaller amounts of greenstone and granite. Here are there in the C么tes de Grandlieu are sandy, pebbly ground coverings.

Climate: The entire vineyard area benefits from a temperate maritime climate with even rainfall throughout the year. There are slight differences in climatic characteristics from one end of the region to the other, caused by varying distances from the coast, Loire and other bodies of water.

Growing/Production Practices: Density approximately 7,000 vines/hectare. All three appellations may produce wines sur lie.
 

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Pale straw yellow with green reflections 
  • Nose: Floral and fruity, with occasional mineral notes. Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire often have flinty aromas while Muscadet C么tes de Grandlieu can be more floral.
  • Flavors: Light-to-medium-bodied with freshness, often floral and fruity notes and crisp acidity.
